Yeah, new characters and some silly FMV cutscenes aside, it's not really that much different from the Playstation version.

Don't kill any ghosts if you ever play XANADUCare to elaborate? I really liked Faxanadu and I've sometimes thought about playing the original... I can't get something out of nothing, but I never tried. www.flyingomelette.com Signature Under Construction |

My fond memories of Speed Buggy are now drenched in saliva. It was kind of amazing to see all of those familiar names in the end credits for Ys, especially in the era of "grab whoever's slacking off around the office" voice acting. I also think that it is no coincidence that the game glitched out on multiple occasions for me during Thomas Hayden Church's part. Combined with his roles in Sideways and Wings, I think he was destined to be involved in things that disturb and annoy me. Care to elaborate? I really liked Faxanadu and I've sometimes thought about playing the original...Well, in Xanadu you have a Karma stat that starts off at zero, which is raised by killing certain enemies you run into in the dungeon (Ghosts in level 3, and then some priest looking things in I think level 7, and probably others that I haven't discovered yet). Now I assumed having high Karma would be good as in Sorcerian (Also, like Xanadu, part of the Dragon Slayer "family" of games), but in Xanadu it's a measure of how evil your character is, and will cause you to be shut out of the Castle and temples (where you cash in your Exp. Points to level up) until you reduce it back to zero by drinking Posion potions that you come across (each bottle of Poison reduces it by 5). Like I said, I thought having high Karma was good, so I killed a bunch of ghosts once I saw they brought it up, quickly working my way up to the maximum of 255. So once I found out I was actually in trouble, and then how to reverse it, it was a loooong road to recovery. Enemies that drop Poison don't always do so, and you can only kill them so many times before they stop appearing, so you can't just sit around and farm them until you get better. You just have to work through the game in your weakened state, coming across Poison as you find it. The dungeons around areas where you might build up Karma are pretty liberal with Poison bottles, but if you accumulate as much as I did, it'll still take a few hours of gameplay before you're cured. After it was over I actually thought it was kind of a fun aspect of the game, like I had a curse that I had to fight tooth and nail to defeat while continuing to make progress, but still, it's something I would've avoided had I known. Also: Go to the Castle to level up rather than the Temples in the dungeon. It's never that long of a trek back to town, and the King gives you points to build up your stats that the Temples don't. |

I don't even remember what Thomas Hadyen Church did. For that matter, the only voice actor I distinctly remember was Michael Bell. I think it's funny
that FO remembers more actors and even characters than I do, considering I beat the game and she hasn't even played it.
I do remember one thing -- the "theif" character had a really scratchy sound file. His speech is also something that would have pissed Ayn Rand off.
See how your opinion ruined Christmas for everyone!

That theif character, Goban, was Thomas Hayden Church. Yeah, it was pretty scratchy. I heard that damn speech about 100 times, the game would cut off the last
word he said and just hang there at the character portrait.

Nah, there was no CD, I just mounted the ISO to a virtual CD drive using Daemon Tools. What worked was switching the emulator to System Card 2.0. The audio
still cut off, but the game progressed to Darm Tower anyway.

I played FFVII with a mod that makes it so the field models of the main characters and some NPCs are realistically proportioned. The best part of this mod,
though, is when you run into an NPC that hasn't been modified and they're frickin' huge compared to your guys. I had a good laugh at Cloud being
dwarfed by Lego children and dainty old women.

Fun note: if you enter your name as HYDLIDE in the PC88 version of Xanadu, your character will start off with 0 hp.
