![]() ![]() Okay, a couple of obvious ones, so sue me. There are still some notable things here. First, that Castlevania 3 box image shows the full box art: Grant's face isn't obscured, as on the cartridge label, and the serpent's face isn't obscured, as on most box art. I don't even know if I knew that such a revision existed. Second, for the best Castlevania games, these have the best art. SotN's box art is pretty basic, as is Simon's Quest (and I think Simon's face is poorly drawn) |

I was actually just about to post the boxart from the Famicom cart release of Castlevania:
![]() I do have a nostalgic affinity for the old silver Konami sidebar, but the full picture makes obvious a few things that aren't readily appearent on the NES cover (most importantly being the batwing sillouette extending from Dracula's head, which I think is a really cool touch). Whatever the case, I think Dracula rarely appears more terrifying than he did on the Castlevania cover (Nosferatu, despite not officially being Dracula due to legal reasons, is all I can think of that trumps it). On a side note, the US art for Dracula's Curse is far superior to the Japanese. |

![]() ![]() I'm not sure what version of Drakkhen this is from, but the cover art is identical on all versions and of all the ones I could find on-line, this one was the best quality for seeing all the details. ![]() Sorry about the low picture quality. It looks a lot better IRL where the color lighting is especially good. ![]() ![]() I remember when this one, the Little Ninja Brothers one, and the Might & Magic one used to be banners at ShnooWorld. ![]() It's an unloved character, but I actually do like the use of perspective here. It's a lot better, IMO, than many covers in which the characters are just standing around. ![]() I don't own this game, but this is my favorite modern-day game boxart. ![]() This one reminds me a lot of a Henri Rousseau painting. ![]() I actually own this (and SFC Albert Odyssey 1), and it's more obvious IRL that they used (clay?) models for this. ![]() I'll try to get a better version of this one eventually, but this was the best I could find for right now. What's interesting about this artwork is that almost the entire middle of the scene is just sky and ocean while the details are on the edges. It's also kind of hard to tell that the "rock" on the right side is actually the first boss until after you've seen it in the game. (Since it's hard to see with this tiny image, I'll point out that Glendaal is on the left side with one hand holding onto a tree as he leans forward with a sword in the other hand.) The PAL version of Equinox has completely different box art and it's one of those things that makes you wonder if it was random artwork they had lying around and decided to use it because it depicts a hero that looks nothing like Glendaal and a red gargoyle monster that looks nothing like any enemy or boss in the game.

Quote: I remember seeing the cover of the Metal Storm issue of NP and wondering if Robotech was making a comeback. That model would be quite the collector's item. Quote: Yeah, the first time I saw the box for Castlevania it actually scared me. That's my default mental image for Dracula. Quote: I've seen a bunch of Turbo/PC Engine game covers that use clay and/or wooden models, unfortunately I don't own any of them. I'd be scanning and posting them all if I did. Caution children! Happy ice cream dancing for you!

![]() This Indiana Jones artwork is unique and cannot be found on anything else besides the game cartridge itself. This is the PAL Equinox artwork. They had to have just taken random artwork that either had no current purpose or was originally intended for another game and slapped the Equinox logo onto it. The hero looks nothing like Glendaal, those gargoyles and dragons look like no enemy or boss in the game, and there appears to be a city in the lower right corner. There are no towns in this game. The only thing that castle could possibly be is Sonia's Fortress, but if that's the case, it should be in a snowy area. And what in the world are those weird "runes" far off in the background between the hero and the castle turrets?

The guy in the back row of Inindo's art looks like Toshiro Mifune (from the old Kurosawa movies).
One of my favorite uses of real, model art for a game is for Tower of Druaga. If you have Namco Museum v. 3, you can see it in the museum mode there. Finding most of it on the web seems difficult, although some of it is featured on the cover of it's Famicom release.
