I scanned my own copy of the Albert Odyssey 2 box art so you can see the models more clearly:




I'm not always the world's biggest fan of "generic" anime art, but I do like the Albert Odyssey Gaiden cover. I think one reason why is because not only does it include every playable character, but AO's characters are a little more distinct than some RPGs. It's not just "the guy with red hair, the guy with green hair, the guy with blue hair, the girl with yellow hair, etc..."


And speaking of which, I'm glad I got the AO disk that has the image with all of the characters on it. The alternate disk designs just have one character.

I didn't scan my copy of it, but the box art for the original SFC Albert Odyssey is laughably terrible. It's mostly just one character whose body was drawn in realistic anime style, but whose head was drawn in superdeformed style. The results are frightening, to say the least.


Firebrand got more and more realistic and evil-looking with each new game, but I like the original the most, where he's all cute and cartoony. And I like the cartoony enemies, too.

Another thing I like about this one is the use of perspective on the columns. It's actually an unusual angle. Columns are usually portrayed straight up-and-down vertically in the background of scenery, but here the characters are situated underneath of them with the camera facing up.

The American version of ALttP came with a poster that had this entire artwork on it and it makes me think this would have looked better if they had zoomed out a little more so that more of the forest would be showing on the front. As it is, there's too much white. But I did like that artwork in its entirety on that poster.


I guess I have a thing for cartoonish game art.

Edit - Okay, so Crawl pointed out that the Link to the Past art is actually the manual, but I could've sworn the SFC box had that same art on it.

Okay, the Japanese ALttP box does have that artwork on it, along with an anime-style drawing of Link. The reason I thought I was right about that is because the ebay seller I bought my Albert Odyssey 1 and 2 carts from had a bunch of other Japanese SFC RPGs and adventure games for sale, and I came very close to buying some of them, which included A Link to the Past, Earthbound, and Final Fantasy 6. I remembered ALttP having that on the box and thinking, "So that's where that poster art came from." It actually does look better here than on the manual because the sword is shifted over slightly, allowing more of the forest scenery in.


I like this artwork for the 5200 Pac-Man. I think this is one of the few times (maybe the only time?) Pac-Man is depicted on box art without arms and legs and yet still looks "3D". On all other boxart I've seen, he either has arms and legs, or is a flat circle. It's also an interesting camera angle used for the maze. On a side note, I never noticed before now that the boxart for the NES version of Pac-Man appears to have been based on the old 80's Pac-Man cartoon. He's wearing the hat, gloves and boots he had in that show and even the ghosts are drawn the same way.


Not boxart, but it doesn't look like this actual art was used for any home versions of Centipede. I'm not the kind of person to get a tattoo, but if I was ever forced to get one against my will, I just hope it will be this.
