Now, I can think of box art I like that doesn't do that. SMB3 is just the one figure. In small doses, just about anything can be okay. FO also said that the cover for Metal Gear Solid sucked, but I thought that sometimes minimalism like that can work, especially for that game in particular.
But SO many modern games, not just one or two, fail that test.
Just taking this page as a random example, I think those covers aren't very good. Almost every single one (except GTA) takes place against some empty void background. About half of them are dominated by one (or two) person in close up (even the Fallout one, which, unless your eyes are right up against it, looks incomprehensible, like just a jumble of garbage)
So, I'd say the most amazing game art posted recently was the one for Zack and Wiki. Now, I could be critical; the characters are constructed out of geometrical shapes (the monkey made of circles, especially). But it has a background?!?! There's a line of action focusing attention?!?! It's colorful?!? It looks like the characters are having fun instead of just standing around in a void?!?!? It's way too good to be a modern game box.
